Types of Fire Alarms

There are several different types of fire alarm system designated by letters M, L and P which can be installed to different levels.

M Fire Alarm Systems - These systems comprise of manual call points located throughout the building, usually found on escape routes and staircases etc. These systems have no automatic detection and are manually operated to raise the alarm
L Fire Alarm Systems - L rated fire alarms systems are concerned primarily with preserving life and are designed to allow all building occupants to be alerted to a fire enabling them to make there escape. There are 5 levels of cover in this type of system L1-L5 with each level
denoting different types of automatic sensors, sirens, and beacons to be fitted and
there locations as stated. These systems are primarily designed to protect life and do
not always require remote monitoring to automatically inform the emergency
services.
P Fire Alarm Systems - P rated fire alarm systems are automatic fire detection systems installed to also protect the building and contents as well as preserving life. The systems should automatically dial out to the emergency services as soon as the fire alarm is activated.
As with L rated systems there are 5 levels of cover when the type of protection from
the equipment used may be varied.
